Find classical music for your ensemble

At Composermusic.dk you can search for classical music for your ensemble or orchestra by entering the instrument list. This is the only place on the internet where this is possible. At the moment it doesn't direct you to a place where you can buy the music, but often it is enough to find out what exists for a certain group. Then it is easier to search local libraries afterwards.

The idea for the site came in the beginning of 2007 when I was going to play in a flute quartet. (I play the cello. You can listen to me at www.cellomusic.dk) Ofcourse the first music I thought of was Mozart's flute quartets. They are quite famous but besides these pieces I know very little of the flute quartet repertoire. Then I went to the homepage of the libraries in Denmark and searched for flute quartet only to realise that the search results were cluttered will all kinds of unneeded books, string quartets and so on. And it was also limitied to what the libraries had on their shelves.

Flute quartet is already a quite well established name for the group with a flute, a violin, a viola and a cello. What if you needed to find something for f. ex. flute, cello and harp! Composermusic.dk solves this problem.

So I came up with the idea of making a database that was searchable by instrument list rather than the name of the piece. Ofcourse you can still do that if that is what you prefer.

It took some days to think of a way to search for instrument lists. It is definitely not a standard function in both php and mysql which I use for this homepage. But after some programming I came up with a solution that works quite well.

I enter the works per composer. Which means that I find complete list of works by known composers. The idea is that the database will grow continuously. You can always see how many works that are in the database to the right of the composermusic.dk logo.

A member page has also been created where composers can add their own works to the database. They can also add a link to their homepage or an e-mail address so users will know where to get the music.
